For a while now I’ve been building a game on the side: Jump Jump King, a 2D platformer made in Godot. You play as a Pomeranian who runs, jumps, dashes, and barks through a freshly generated level every time, collecting bones, riding platforms, hitting checkpoints, dodging traps and enemies, and racing to the goal before the clock or your lives run out.

You can play it right now in your browser at play.raaijmakers.it. No download, no install, just pick a seed and start running.

The concept

Every run is different. Instead of a fixed set of levels, you pick or share a seed and get a freshly generated course to play through, full of gaps to clear, platforms to ride, and hazards to dodge on the way to the goal. Fall off the level or get caught by something dangerous and you lose a life. Run out of lives and the run is over. There’s also a short tutorial that walks you through the controls before dropping you into a real run.

How it feels to play

Getting the movement to feel good was the whole point. Running builds up into a sprint the longer you hold a direction, so momentum feels earned rather than instant. You’ve got a jump, an air jump for correcting mistakes, and a dash that punches through most obstacles and closes gaps a jump alone can’t reach. And when things get dangerous, a well-timed bark is your last resort against the enemies that a dash can’t save you from.

Enemies with personality

I didn’t want one generic enemy that just chases you. Each hazard plays differently:

  • A cat that patrols and gives chase, but gives up if you can outrun it.
  • A crow that watches from above and dive bombs when you’re in its path, a threat you can see coming and dodge.
  • A fly that never gives up once it notices you. Dashing through it won’t save you here. Barking will.

Checkpoints double as safe zones, so planting yourself on one buys you a moment of breathing room against anything relentless enough to corner you.

The little touches

The Pomeranian you’re playing as isn’t just any dog. He’s based on my own pet, King, which is also where the game gets its name.

Try it, and stay tuned

The game is still evolving. I’m continuing to tune the levels, the enemies, and the overall feel, and I’ll be sharing more updates as new pieces come together. Downloadable builds for Android and desktop are planned for a later release, for now the browser version is the place to play. Go give it a run at play.raaijmakers.it and see how far you get.
